As the snow melts many Canadians trade skis for bikes… and for good reason. Canada offers some of the best mountain biking in the world. Grandiose mountains, dramatic coastlines and pristine lakes make Canada the perfect backdrop for a variety of trails for all skill levels. With 9.9 million square kilometres – there is lots to explore! This list could easily include hundreds of mountain biking destinations in Canada, but here are six to get you started, highlighting towns from coast to coast.
1. CUMBERLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA
Located on Vancouver Island, Cumberland offers a huge network of cross country trails where you can explore mountaintops and beautiful coastline all in the same day. Visit a local bike shop for trail directions and tips. Be prepared to feel the laid back lifestyle of west coast islanders, and if you have time check out the mountain bike scene on nearby Hornby Island… a couple ferry rides away and you won’t regret it. If you’re up for a real adventure, visit in the winter months and try skiing at Mount Washington Alpine Resort (just north of Cumberland) in the morning and mountain biking in the afternoon….you can get the best of both worlds on the west coast. Summer 2016 will also mark the re-opening of downhill trails at Mount Washington Alpine Resort.
2. FERNIE, BRITISH COLUMBIA
Cross country, downhill, lift-access, fat-biking, skills park – you name it, Fernie has it. There are six distinct areas around Fernie that offer over 90 trails to explore. Did I mention there are also beautiful mountains and top-notch restaurants/cafes for your pre and post-ride beverages? If you’re exploring on your own, remember you’re in the mountains… be prepared for sudden changes in weather, carry an extra layer and always tell someone your planned route.
